For this week’s analysis, we will look at the beautiful Lovers on the Bridge (1991) directed by Leos Carax. This singular film follows Alex, a homeless fire-eater, played by the talented and, in my humble opinion, unrivaled Denis Lavant - already mentioned in this month’s theme for his role in Beau Travail (Claire Denis, 1999) - and Michèle, interpreted by the brilliant and outstanding Juliette Binoche.

Alex finds home on the pont Neuf, a bridge in the thick of Paris closed to the public for being in construction. This life and home of errance and misery is shared with Hans, an old man and holder of Alex’s ingress to sleep with sleeping pills.

The established order gets disturbed by Michèle’s arrival on the bridge, sleeping in Alex’s usual site when Alex has to spend a night at the hospital after being run over by a rich couple whilst driving. Hans is deeply upset by this unwanted feminine presence, whilst Alex falls madly in love with this former painter who chose a life of vagrancy triggered by a broken heart concomitantly as her sight’s degradation. 

Their relationship becomes codependent as Michèle relies on Alex to navigate through the city as her vision deteriorates progressively, whilst Alex is afraid that she will leave him if a medical treatment is discovered in order to cure her, and will make anything possible for it not to happen. 

The film embarks its audience in this explosive, intense, risky and anything but classical love story.

Music plays an essential role in the whole of Carax’s cinematography. In the dynamic scene of the 14th of July’s celebration, the couple's dance on the bridge is ruled by music, acting as a character itself and a medium replacing the unspoken between Alex and Michèle.

The diversity of music genres present in this scene succeed each other to eventually overlap, echoing with relationship’s complexities and the universality and timelessness of love.

Their gestures are unstructured, embodying excessive passion and its consequences; suffering, dependency, losing a sense of self.

The choice of this seemingly disjointed soundtrack, from Strong Girl by Iggy Pop to classical music such as Arvo Prät and Johann Strauss’ pieces, their lack of coherence and unusual transitions highlight the unconventional aspect and rejection of social injunctions of their relationship, also applied in their lives.

The music carries the characters and from its intensity emanates a liberty and almost an envious form of freedom, despite its context of lack of material assets.

The set design of the Bastille Day fireworks sequence in Leos Carax’s Les Amants du Pont Neuf transforms Parisian spectacle into a charged, theatrical space of excess and intimacy. Rather than relying on the actual city, the production reconstructed the Pont Neuf at monumental scale, allowing precise control over lighting, and pyrotechnics.

The bridge’s heavily worn stone textures and emptied urban expanse situate the protagonists at the margins of civic order, while the fireworks reframe national celebration as a private, ecstatic rupture. Bursts of colour ricochet across water and masonry, rhythmically synchronised with the characters’ movement. This artificial Paris intensifies emotion by abstracting the city into light, sound, and architecture, using set design to collapse public ritual and personal desire into a single, operatic mise-en-scène.

The Pont Neuf itself carries strong symbolic weight that deepens the impact of the scene’s set design. As the oldest surviving bridge in Paris, it embodies historical continuity, permanence, and the authority of the city’s past. In Les Amants du Pont-Neuf however, this emblem of stability is rendered empty, damaged, and partially closed, transforming it into a liminal space suspended between use and abandonment. By staging the fireworks on this bridge, the film juxtaposes national heritage with social marginality, allowing the protagonists to temporarily reclaim a monumental site from which they are otherwise excluded. The Pont Neuf thus becomes both a threshold and a refuge, mediating between public history and private experience, repeatedly echoing the liminal belonging of the characters to the city’s society.
