This work owes its creation to three minds: mine and two of my Studio classmates, Tom and Lily. All three of us were assigned different tasks in the making of a space of freedom, mine being the making of the 3D model. We were first inspired by Trace, Threads and Surfaces by Tim Ingold, which led us to focus on reductive and additive lines, giving a sense of entrapment. The tandem work of these surfaces managed to illustrate a theme that was very peculiar to us, a specific interpretation of the word freedom.
We wanted to work on the duality and paradox between freedom / entrapment. Having followed a thorough education in philosophy I referred to the work of Sartre and more specifically his existentialism : how "Man is condemned to be free”.
In order to represent this entrapment of choices we decided to create this out of proportion supermarket, full of windows allowing everyone to see and with shelves forming the shape of a maze. Small details are hidden everywhere to pursue this narrative with, for example, cars parked in a small square when they could park anywhere else but decided to stay in this illusion of freedom.
